Abstract. The hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis determines the set point of thyroid hormone (TH) production. Hypothalamic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates the synthesis and secretion of pituitary thyrotropin (thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH), which acts at the thyroid to stimulate all steps of TH biosynthesis and secretion. The hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis is part of the neuroendocrine system responsible for the regulation of metabolism and also responds to stress. As its name suggests, it depends upon the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the thyroid gland. The hypothalamus senses low circulating levels of thyroid hormone and responds by releasing thyrotropin-releasing hormone. The TRH stimulates the anterior pituitary to produce thyroid-stimulating hormone. The TSH, in turn, stimulates the ...

Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis diagram. CHAPTER 4 PHYSIOLOGY OF THE HYPOTHALAMIC-PITUITARY-THYROID AXIS Stefano Mariotti, M.D.Department of Endocrinology Institute of Internal Medicine University of Cagliari Policlinico Universitario S.S. 554, Bivio per Sestu I-09042 Monserrato CA, ITALY Tel: 011-39-70-602-86430 Fax: 011-39-70-602-86429 The activity of the thyroid gland is predominantly regulated by the concentration of the pituitary glycoprotein hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). In the absence of the pituitary or of thyrotroph function, hypothyroidism ensues. Thus, regulation of thyroid function in normal individuals is to a large extent determined by the factors which regulate the synthesis and secretion of TSH. The diagrams below illustrate the three main axes involving the hypothalamus and pituitary: the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis (HPT) and the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPG axis). Related terms: . All information is peer reviewed. Regulation of Thyroid Function. The hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis functions as a typical feedback loop (Fig. 98.1). Triiodothyronine (T 3) levels in the pituitary gland direct secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Also, an inverse relationship exists between thyroid hormone formation and iodide level in the thyroid. Hypothalamic — Pituitary — Thyroid Axis. The thyroid gland is influenced by hormones produced by two other organs: The pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain, produces thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) The hypothalamus, a small part of the brain above the pituitary, produces thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). The pituitary is connected to the hypothalamus via a stalk of tissue called the infundibulum. Anterior Pituitary The six major anterior pituitary hormones are peptides. The Six Major Anterior pituitary hormones are: 1. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH or thyrotropin) 2. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH, a gonadotropin) 3.
